with paste!

paste sampler on Rives BFK  - - - - - - - - - - - - -
After my rather long holiday break, I decided the first day back to the studio had to be all about playing!
I ended up choosing a paste paint production day to get back to my normal art-working life, immersed in the joy of transforming blank paper into a multitude of coloured textures.
For this particular session I mixed a paste of cake flour and cornstarch. I never measure; I usually apply  the old world method of using whatever in hand, and proceed by pouring water from a jug while stirring the mixture over the stove until it thickens. When the paste cools down, I add some more (cold) water to achieve the consistency/fluidity I need for the specific project.

    1. Hi Christine,
Thank you for visiting my blog!
Rives BFK is a cotton rag paper made in France.
Because of its strength it is used mainly by printmakers.
As the above examples show it is my preferred paper for all sorts of applications, well beyond the printmaking studio...

    2. Hello Anna,
thanks for the reply. I guess it's what we call "Vorsatzpapier" in Germany.
I'm looking foreward to see your next paste pasters.

  2. Anna, you make the production of the paste sound a bit serendipitous but the papers produced by 'playing' are anything but. I love that soft, hazy look your papers have and wonder now if that is down to the paper? You are using good quality paper whereas I would usually play with anything to hand. Have not made paste papers for ages but do have some Rives BFK so might give it a try. Shall let you know the outcome.

    1. Lesley, I am using al sorts of paper and my results are rather consistent. The choice of paper depends on the final use of the specific work... I would love to see your results with Rives.
