winter paper whites...
Yesterday I came upon a video demonstration of the Japanese technique of paper yarn making, and had to try it! So I got some paper, and followed Susan Byrd's amazing instructions and voilà! I managed to form some very yummy looking stringy lengths that I am totally thrilled with. Of course I couldn't just stop there, I had to photograph the stages of transformation and before I knew it... my straight forward images were changing into imaginary white worlds...
Susan Byrd's video was posted on Facebook, at: Paper Threads, Yarns and Textiles. You can access it there.

Yes, I saw that video and thought of strudel-making!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful site that is, Anna! I've spent ages reading and looking at the videos. I'm tempted to ask if I can join but I'm already overburdened with the things I'm trying to do so I suspect I'd be an unsatisfactory member. I'll keep an eye on it via you... Your winter whites are so beautiful. Simple, typically elegant. I'm sure you'll make beautiful items with this new skill. And Happy New Year, to you and your loved ones!
ReplyDeleteSuch fine paper thread! Love how the thread transformed into worlds. Enjoy!
ReplyDeletebeautiful images.
ReplyDeleteThat's wonderful, Anna! I've long wanted to try something similar, but have been too intimidated and/or never got around to it. A Song of Praise for Shifu is sitting on my on-again-off-again reading pile. It's a lovely book… that makes it seem that making paper thread might be a difficult thing to undertake! I'm very impressed with what you've done. It looks luscious! Thanks for the link. I hadn't seen the video. (Great photos too, by the way!)
ReplyDeleteSimply beautiful white worlds! The first thing that came to mind when I saw your third image was Fay Jones' Thorncrown Chapel, a modern sort of Gothic Cathedral. I love how you've taken this technique and made even more of your results with it...
ReplyDeleteLike a white winter fantasy... love the idea of making string from paper.
ReplyDeleteHi AM - great outcome with the paper string making; but also love the images of the layers of cut paper. B
